Gustavus Hindman Miller was a Chattanooga merchant who spent three decades gathering dream interpretations, and published them in 1901 as What's in a Dream. Under its later title, Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted, it became the most widely reprinted dream book in English.
Its influence is easier to see than to credit. Search any modern dream dictionary for what it means to dream of teeth falling out, or of water, or of a snake, and the answer will usually be Miller's, condensed and stripped of his name. He is the common ancestor, and almost nobody prints him.
This edition prints the book in order. Twenty-five letter divisions, A to Z, each opening with the biblical epigraph Miller set over it, and every entry in his own phrasing, with one exception, stated rather than hidden: entries that treat kinds of people as omens, by race, religion, disability or sex, are removed, and a Note on This Edition at the front explains why.
What that gives a reader is the ability to check. Where a phrase in a dream dictionary sounds oddly specific, it can be traced here. Where a modern entry contradicts the tradition it claims, the contradiction is visible. The book is evidence about the history of a popular idea, and it can only work as evidence if its omissions are stated. Ours are.
Miller's own framing is worth knowing. He treats dreams as meaningful and says so, but he opens with a survey of what he calls fragmentary thoughts from dream realms and a set of questions and subjective answers, which is a more cautious posture than his reputation suggests. This edition prints that front matter rather than skipping to the dictionary.
A NOTE ON THIS EDITION. Set from a proofread transcription, so nothing was reconstructed. The transcriber identifies the copy text as closest to the M. A. Donohue and Company printing, New York, undated, rather than the 1901 G. W. Dillingham first edition, and this edition repeats that identification rather than claiming a certainty nobody has.
Two repairs are recorded in full in the restoration notes. The letter B was not a heading in the source: the transcriber ran it into the epigraph that follows it, so every entry from Baby to Butter sat under A with no division above it. It has been restored to a heading. Miller has no X entries, and none has been invented to fill the gap. Miller's own index, keyed to the page numbers of the 1901 printing, is omitted; this edition's Contents does its work.
