Billy Budd and Other Prose Pieces by Herman Melville brings together Billy Budd, Sailor and additional prose writings by one of America's most important nineteenth-century authors. The collection showcases Melville's distinctive literary style and his enduring interest in morality, human nature, authority, and the conflicts between individual conscience and social order. Billy Budd centers on a young and seemingly innocent sailor aboard a British naval vessel whose actions bring him into conflict with authority and raise difficult questions about justice, innocence, duty, and evil. Through the story, Melville examines the tension between natural goodness and institutional law. The accompanying prose pieces further demonstrate Melville's range as a writer, combining psychological insight, philosophical reflection, symbolism, and literary experimentation. This collection offers readers a valuable introduction to the later prose of a major figure in American literature.
