Provincial schoolteacher Peredonov longs for promotion and status, but suspicion turns neighbors into enemies and ordinary events into evidence of conspiracy. As he becomes increasingly obsessed with imagined threats, his fear and resentment distort the world around him until the grotesque little demon of his imagination seems almost to take physical form. Sologub builds from schools, gossip, courtship, petty officialdom, and domestic cruelty into a blackly comic vision of psychological and social decay. Peredonov's paranoia is extreme, yet the provincial society surrounding him often appears disturbingly suited to it. Envy, humiliation, deceit, opportunism, and casual cruelty are not confined to one unstable mind; they circulate through the community and help give his delusions their terrible force. At the center of the novel is Peredonov's increasingly distorted perception of reality. He interprets chance events as plots, mistrusts those around him, and imagines hidden enemies everywhere. The mysterious Nedotykomka-a shifting, elusive creature that haunts his vision-becomes one of the novel's most memorable images, embodying the fear, ugliness, and instability that have overtaken his inner life. Yet The Little Demon is more than a portrait of mental collapse. Sologub uses Peredonov's decline to satirize a provincial world governed by status, bureaucracy, gossip, sexual intrigue, and small acts of domination. Teachers, officials, acquaintances, and family members maneuver for advantage while cruelty is often treated as ordinary entertainment. The result is a society in which the grotesque no longer feels exceptional. First published in Russian in 1907, the novel became one of the defining works associated with Russian Symbolism. Its combination of realism, satire, psychological distortion, and symbolic imagery gives the story a disturbing instability: the reader is never allowed to forget the ugliness of Peredonov's behavior, yet the world around him offers little moral clarity. Darkly comic, unsettling, and increasingly hallucinatory, The Little Demon explores paranoia, cruelty, corruption, and the way a degraded social environment can intensify private obsession. Sologub transforms provincial life into a nightmare in which the ridiculous and the terrifying become almost impossible to separate.
