A homeless artist with remarkable skills, Ed Newell (1940-1981) managed with training solely from a high school art class to create work with a startling proto-Pop Art originality. Stoked by bi-polar episodes, Newell created strange stylized works that have the appeal of classic works by outsider artists such as Martin Ramirez and Henry Darger.
Newell was a habitué of Venice Beach, living in abandoned buildings, old cars, doorways, and basements. His works were facilitated by the artist community of then derelict Venice Beach where a host of 1960s artists had low-cost studios. Included in Palm Springs Art Museum’s Newell survey are his amazing paintings of surrogate cats along with paintings of the Venice canals that demonstrate his remarkable natural draftsmanship and the decrepit allure of Venice at that time.
