In 1927, at a hotel on the Italian Riviera, a hundred windows watch everything that happens on the gravel below, which is precisely Elizabeth Bowen's subject. The Hotel is a comedy of manners with a knife inside it: bridge tables, gossiping mothers, an engagement announced over tea. But its real story belongs to Sydney Warren, twenty-two, clever, and sent abroad by relations who don't know what else to do with her, and Mrs. Kerr, an elegant widow twice her age who becomes the center of Sydney's attention long before any man does.
When Sydney accepts a proposal from the amiable Mr. Milton, she tells him plainly that she does not love him. She wants to marry him anyway, and everyone in the hotel, right down to the bridge players, understands the engagement for what it actually is: retaliation against a woman, not affection for a man. Bowen never uses the word for what passes between Sydney and Mrs. Kerr. She doesn't have to. The building does the talking: its glass-caged lift, its thin-walled corridors, its balconies arranged like an address book for anyone counting windows from the garden below.
Bowen wrote The Hotel a year before The Well of Loneliness was hauled into court and ordered destroyed for describing the same attachment without her caution. This edition restores that context: a new critical introduction traces the novel's architecture of exposure, its marriage plot built and then deliberately left empty, and the queer charge running under Bowen's famous reticence.
Lavender Octavo publishes annotated editions of public-domain fiction chosen for what it says to lesbian readers, and for anyone who has noticed how much the canon left unsaid.
