A staged Crimean battle. A deadly real-world shot. An impossible crime executed in full view of five hundred witnesses.
When Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson secure stalls for the much-heralded opening week of The Siege of Sebastopol at London's Duchess Theatre, they anticipate nothing more dangerous than an evening of synthetic tragedy and theatrical gunpowder. The play's thunderous climax is celebrated across the West End: a smoke-choked skirmish across the Malakoff redoubt featuring pyrotechnic flash-pans, roaring choristers, and stage weapons discharging blank cartridges.
Yet when the scripted standoff arrives, drama turns to catastrophe.
As the villain of the piece, Malcolm Ross, levels his antique prop revolver and fires, romantic stage idol Julian Drake collapses onto the boards, his dying agony terribly, horrifyingly real. When the red curtain descends and the house lights flare, Drake does not rise for his ovation. Watson rushes past the footlights only to find him drowned in catastrophic hemorrhage-his breastbone shattered by a high-velocity slug.
With an angry mob outside and the theatre under police lockdown, Inspector Lestrade finds an open-and-shut case: Ross had a notorious, bitter feud with Drake over debts and the affections of leading lady Miss Clara Devereux, and the prop weapon in his hand still reeks of fresh powder.
Only Sherlock Holmes looks beyond the obvious.
A microscopic examination of the dead man's scarlet uniform reveals a startling anomaly: the cloth is completely devoid of powder burns, scorch marks, or carbon tattooing, proving the fatal missile was never fired from five paces away. Sighting a taut red surveyor's cord along the bullet's steep 38-degree downward trajectory, Holmes traces the line of fire straight into the dizzying, shadowed heights of the upper fly-lofts-and through a freshly bored aperture in a high timber ventilator.
The shot was fired from outside the theatre, from the iron fire-escape of an adjacent printing warehouse across the alleyway. The crack of an imported Mannlicher rifle had been masked with chronometer-like precision beneath the roaring thunder of stage pyrotechnics.
To unmask the unseen marksman and uncover the mastermind behind the crime, Holmes must reconstruct a decade-old conspiracy born amidst the burning wreckage of a Balkan railway and untangle a web of blackmail, high finance, and imperial betrayal.
Step back into 221B Baker Street with this atmospheric, authentic Sherlockian pastiche-faithfully capturing the deductive brilliance, historical texture, and classic narrative voice of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
