Every man has a story before he becomes the man everyone knows.
Long before Falcon Hollow knew him as Detective Duke Mantz, he was Travis, a boy growing up in western Maryland with a close-knit family, a love of baseball, and a father who seemed capable of fixing anything. Robert Mantz was more than his father. He was his teacher, his friend, and the example Travis would carry with him long after a sudden tragedy changed their lives.
As Travis and his mother begin again in Falcon Hollow, he finds new friendships, discovers first love, and starts to imagine a future beyond the small town. At eighteen, he enlists in the United States Army, beginning a journey that will take him far from home and introduce him to the name by which everyone will eventually know him: Duke.
Military service brings new responsibilities, lasting friendships, and experiences that test his judgment and resolve. As a military policeman and later an investigator, Duke learns to look beyond first impressions, ask difficult questions, and follow the evidence wherever it leads. Along the way, he builds a life with Laurie Cross, confronts the challenges of marriage and military service, and discovers that even the strongest relationships can change without losing their meaning.
When his Army career comes to an end, Duke returns to Falcon Hollow uncertain of what comes next. The town he once left behind offers him an opportunity to build a different kind of life. Joining the local police department, he must adapt his military experience to the needs of a close-knit community, earn the trust of his fellow officers, and find his place among the people he has chosen to serve.
His journey eventually leads to the detective's badge and a first case that will leave a lasting impression.
Falcon Hollow Origins: Duke Mantz is a character-driven novel about family, friendship, love, loss, service, and finding a way forward. Set in the world of the Falcon Hollow Mysteries, it reveals the experiences that shaped a familiar detective and the people whose influence remains with him.
Before Detective Mantz, there was Duke. Before the badge, there was Travis.
