In what constitutes a deeply personal book, Morris Berman presents a collection of writings that are also commentaries on contemporary life. As the subtitle indicates, these include poems, essays, and short stories, ranging over topics such as our compelling need for war, as well as for peace; the power that dogma and ideology have over our lives; and the tension between being driven to succeed and compete vs. our existential needs-especially our need for love. Viktor Frankl, Cliff Clavin (from Cheers), Edith Piaf, and even Diana Ross are just a few of the characters the reader will encounter along the way, in what the author hopes is an absorbing, and often hopeful, study of the human condition.
Morris Berman is a poet, novelist, essayist, social critic, and cultural historian. He has written thirty-two books and nearly 200 articles, and has taught at a number of universities in Europe, North America, Chile, and Mexico. He won the Governor's Writers Award for Washington State in 1990, and was the first recipient of the annual Rollo May Center Grant for Humanistic Studies in 1992. In 2000, The Twilight of American Culture was named a "Notable Book" by the New York Times Book Review, and in 2013 he received the Neil Postman Award for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity from the Media Ecology Association. Dr. Berman lives in Mexico.
