Portrait

Constance Chua is a postdoctoral fellow at the International Research Institute of Disaster Science, Tohoku University. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Hazard and Disaster Risk Management at the University of Canterbury and was awarded the Sir Julius von Haast Prize for academic excellence. Constance obtained her Ph.D. degree from Nanyang Technological University. She was a research fellow at the Earth Observatory of Singapore between 2021 and 2023. Her research interest lies in coastal hazards and risk management, with particular focus on coastal hazards impacts on critical infrastructure. Aside from her core research, Constance also has active roles in the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) as session convenor, a committee member of the Coastal Zone Working Group and secretary to the Interdisciplinary Geosciences section.

Hsiao-Wen Wang is a professor at Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). She is also the director of both the Disaster Prevention Research Center and Disaster Prevention Education Center at NCKU, where she also serves as the coordinator of the Certificate Program of Sustainable Development. Her research focus include river restoration, coastal wetland management, participatory planning, and disaster risk management. She is particularly interested in addressing problems known today and predicted for the future combing science with local wisdom. Hsiao-Wen was the Vice President for International Affairs at NCKU from 2019 to 2023. She was a post-doctoral researcher at UC Berkeley before she joined NCKU in 2008. Her work has earned her the National Geographic Society Global Explorer Grant (2017/2018), the Fulbright Senior Research Award (2018/2019), and an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Fellowship.

Qinglan Li is a professor at Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIAT). She obtained her bachelor's degree from Tianjin University in 1992. Qinglan obtained her master’s degree from McGill University in 2006 and her Ph.D. degree from the University of Hong Kong in 2010, majoring in Water and Environmental Engineering. She previously worked as a Senior Environmental Consultant at AECOM Hong Kong before joining SIAT in 2011. Her research focuses on meteorological big data, AI-enabled meteorological prediction, intelligent tropical cyclone (TC) forecasting, TC intensity prediction, regional wind and rainfall forecast induced by TCs, numerical model interpretation, and meteorological disaster and climate change studies. Prof. Li has led over 10 provincial and national research projects, including programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. She has published more than 60 high-level papers and holds 16 authorized invention patents. Her core TC forecasting technologies have been operationally applied in the national and regional meteorological departments, and she was awarded the First Prize of Shenzhen Science and Technology Progress Award as the first completer.
