Before buying an MGB, the most important thing to inspect is everything the seller hopes the buyer will overlook...
Is the car genuinely sound, or is it a polished "rot-box" hiding structural corrosion?
Which model, year, body style, specification, and modifications actually fit the intended use?
What needs fixing now, what can wait, and what can the owner realistically handle himself?
Written for the realities of modern classic-car ownership, MGB & MGB GT Owner's Handbook by David Thomas MD takes an owner-first approach rather than attempting to replace established workshop manuals. It connects buying, inspection, first-90-days ownership, maintenance, diagnosis, restoration planning, and sensible upgrades into one practical decision-making system.
Inside you'll discover how to:- Choose the Right MGB - Compare model years, roadsters, GTs, bumpers, specifications, and intended use.
- Decode Model-Year Differences - Recognize important changes before buying or ordering parts.
- Inspect Before You Buy - Follow a disciplined pre-purchase inspection sequence.
- Find Structural Rust - Know where sills, floors, mounts, and spring hangers demand attention.
- See Beyond Shiny Paint - Identify clues to filler, poor repairs, overspray, and restoration shortcuts.
- Good / Questionable / Dangerous - Make condition judgments more consistently.
- Evaluate the Drivetrain - Understand engines, transmissions, and overdrive.
- Understand Federal Cars - Navigate U.S.-specification differences with greater confidence.
- Build a First-90-Days Plan - Establish a reliable baseline after purchase.
- Prioritize Repairs - Separate safety issues from maintenance, cosmetics, and future restoration.
- Diagnose Before Replacing Parts - Use symptom-first troubleshooting logic.
- Tackle Electrical Gremlins - Approach battery, grounds, charging, starting, and wiring problems systematically.
- Understand SU Carburetors - Build practical confidence in inspection and diagnosis.
- Plan Restoration Intelligently - Control costs and avoid restoration creep.
- Choose Sensible Upgrades - Improve reliability while preserving the MGB's character.
Already own a Haynes or factory workshop manual? This handbook is designed to complement those references, not pretend they do not exist. It fills the ownership gap between researching a car, deciding whether to buy it, establishing its condition, and knowing what to do next.
Experienced mechanic? The focus is not basic automotive theory; it is what is different and important about MGBs. New to classic cars? The information is organized around decisions, symptoms, inspections, and practical priorities rather than assuming years of MG experience.
If you want to understand what your MGB actually needs, then keep this handbook in the garage and work through its practical systems.
