The subject of this research is children's literature in Arabic literature, or Arabic children's literature. It comprises three sections: the first addresses the concept of children's literature, its distinctive characteristics, and its role; the second examines children's literature and classical Arabic literature, exploring its influence from both national and foreign traditions; and the third explores the origins of this genre in both Western and Arabic literature, and its development in Arabic literature in two phases: the initial phase of emergence and establishment, and the second phase of consolidation. This section also identifies prominent figures in this genre, their works, and the characteristics of these works during these two phases.
This research necessitated a study of several central issues that constitute its core problem: defining the concept of this genre and distinguishing it from children's culture and other literary forms; identifying the distinctive characteristics of this genre; understanding the role of the reader, whose age varies, in shaping its identity; examining its function in the child's upbringing and development; analyzing the reality of its critical reception; examining the historical context of this literary genre; and addressing the question of whether it is considered ancient or modern in both Western and Arabic literature. Benefiting from both national and foreign heritages: inspiration and translation... And if it is modern, what was offered to children in the past? The literary experience that led to the emergence and development of this literature, the course of this development in modern Arabic literature, the most prominent figures of this course, the literary nature of this literature, and the system of educational values...
