This book brings together original essays in tribute to André Green, written by distinguished psychoanalysts. It develops the theme of his most famous paper under the same title and describes the value of linking the concept of the dead mother to other areas of clinical relevance: psychological reality, interpersonal phenomena, emotions, and autism.
The concept of the dead mother describes a clinical phenomenon, sometimes difficult to define, but always present in a large number of patients. It describes a process by which the mental image of a living, loving mother is transformed into a distant, expressionless, and especially lifeless figure-dead. In reality, the mother remains alive, but she has died in the child's eyes. This results in the child's depression, and these feelings are carried into adulthood.
The loss of maternal love leads to a loss of meaning in life. Nothing seems to have meaning for the child, yet life appears to continue on a semblance of normality.
This work, *The Dead Mother*, is a valuable contribution to the literature of psychoanalytic approaches to studying grief, loss, and depression.
