Therefore, individuals must be aware of these changes in order to prepare for them before entering this phase. It is no wonder, then, that some individuals adapt to old age, becoming active, productive, and fulfilled. Conversely, if an individual is unprepared, they may reject this new reality and rush into many harmful behaviors and actions that negatively impact themselves and those around them.
Psychologists have described two crises that humans experience:
a. The Adolescent Crisis: This involves re-evaluating everything one has received and accepted throughout life, and it is now time for objection, criticism, and perhaps even rebellion.
b. The Retirement Crisis: Upon reaching the age at which individuals must retire from work, they must re-evaluate all phases of their lives. The result is either acceptance or rejection and resentment, which negatively impacts their own life and the lives of others in cases of rejection and inability to adapt, whether to themselves or others.
I have strived, across eleven chapters, to address a specific aspect of the elderly, each chapter focusing on one particular facet. I would have preferred to continue discussing many other aspects that the elderly should know about themselves, and which are also important for families and care institutions serving the elderly to be aware of. However, I stopped after the eleventh chapter, feeling that the book had become reasonable and satisfactory in covering most of the aspects that need to be known and understood about the elderly.
