The resulting picture challenges the familiar idea that the expansion of Christianity was driven primarily by a small group of apostles and missionaries.
Instead, Jerusalem appears to have produced something much larger: a ministry force.
Ordinary believers had learned to pray together, care for one another, proclaim the gospel, make disciples, and function as communities. When persecution scattered them, the ministry scattered with them.
But this is more than an investigation of the early church. It raises an uncomfortable modern question.
What if the purpose of gathering believers is not simply to build larger churches-but to develop disciples who are capable of being scattered?
