A wearable work of art that transforms the everyday into the extraordinary.
No accessory is quite as versatile as Hermès' timeless silk scarf. With its origins dating back to 1930s Lyon, France, the first Hermès "carré" - literally translating to square in French - was skilfully designed by Robert Dumas-Hermès and Hugo Grygkar. Today, it is said that every 20 seconds, an iconic Hermès scarf is sold. Blending fashion and function, the durability and luxury of Chinese silk used in Hermès scarves exemplifies extraordinary craftsmanship, earning them a legendary status among the most-coveted accessories in the world.
Inside The Little Guide to the Hermès Scarf, unfurl the legacy of the expertly woven carré. From its equestrian roots, to classic motifs and colourways, uncover its journey from cabin-crew chic to cinematic allure.

"A woman without a scarf is a woman without a future" - Elizabeth Taylor
"The [Hermes] house stands still in the dizzy world of fast fashion, ready to tell a new story with each new scarf design."
The creation of an Hermès scarf can take up to two years with approximately 140 distinct stages. The key stages are: designing the scarf, engraving the motif (takes up to nine months), colouring work (can last up to six months), "Lyonnaise printing" onto the silk using a flat frame, silk weaving (400-600 hours) and hand-rolling the scarves' edges (45 minutes for each scarf).
