The novel unfolds across a single day, yet whole lives rise within its hours. A scent, a street, a sound from Big Ben, or an unexpected visitor can release decades of memory. Perspectives pass from one mind to another, revealing a city crowded with separate consciousnesses that touch briefly without ever becoming fully known. Clarissa's party gathers politicians, old friends, disappointed lovers, and family beneath one roof, turning a social occasion into a delicate test of connection. First published in 1925, Mrs. Dalloway is one of the defining novels of literary modernism. Woolf's fluid movement through thought and memory captures both the radiant surface of ordinary life and the grief concealed beneath it.
