Integrated Ecological Risk Assessment for Freshwater Ecosystems: A Multi-stressor Framework for Aquatic Ecosystem Stability presents an integrated framework for understanding, assessing, and managing ecological risk in freshwater ecosystems exposed to multiple interacting environmental stressors.
Freshwater ecosystems are increasingly affected by nutrient enrichment, chemical contamination, habitat degradation, altered hydrology, climate change, biological invasions, and other anthropogenic pressures. These stressors rarely operate independently and may produce cumulative effects, nonlinear responses, ecological instability, loss of resilience, and ecological transitions that conventional single-stressor approaches may fail to adequately characterize.
This book develops the Integrated Framework for Ecological Risk Assessment (IFERA) as a structured, iterative architecture for addressing these challenges. IFERA integrates problem formulation, exposure and effects assessment, risk characterization, risk management, monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and adaptive decision-making. The framework connects scientific assessment with environmental management, governance, and regulatory decision-making.
Particular attention is given to integrating physicochemical, biological, contaminant, landscape, and climatic information into assessments of ecological condition and risk. Established approaches-including trophic-state indices, water-quality indices, biological indicators, pollution indices, and species sensitivity distributions-are considered alongside emerging technologies such as environmental DNA, autonomous and real-time monitoring, sensor networks, remote sensing, machine learning, digital twins, and ecological forecasting.
The book also examines the governance of ecological risk, addressing adaptive and polycentric governance, institutional learning, stakeholder participation, Indigenous and local knowledge, environmental justice, regulatory frameworks, and decision-making under uncertainty. The framework considers legal and institutional dimensions alongside scientific assessment to show how risk information can be translated into effective environmental action.
Climate change adds another dimension to the framework. Changing temperature and precipitation regimes, altered hydrology, habitat transformation, and increasing ecological uncertainty require assessment systems that can adapt as environmental conditions change. IFERA therefore emphasizes iterative assessment, adaptive management, long-term monitoring, early detection of ecological change, and incorporation of new information.
The book concludes by considering emerging challenges for ecological risk assessment, including climate change, biodiversity loss, digitalization, artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, and evolving international biodiversity policy.
Integrated Ecological Risk Assessment for Freshwater Ecosystems provides an interdisciplinary foundation for evaluating ecological risk as a dynamic, multi-stressor phenomenon. Its central premise is that effective freshwater protection requires moving beyond isolated stressor evaluation toward integrated assessment, adaptive management, and long-term ecological stability.
