This book offers a clear and engaging account of how AI is reshaping justice systems around the world and why this matters for society. Examining predictive and surveillance technologies used in the UK and US alongside deployments in ten Sub-Saharan African countries, it moves beyond Western-centric debates. It draws on policy analysis to reveal how system focused logics produce weak AI governance frameworks that cannot sufficiently address human-centric challenges. Examples of such issues include AI bias, lack of transparency, risks posed by AI systems imported into African nations, and human rights concerns.
The book makes a compelling case for rethinking the regulation of AI systems deployed in high risk domains such as justice systems. It proposes a transformative, participatory and context-specific AI governance framework, and is aimed at researchers, students, policy makers, practitioners and civil society organisations alike.
