Gender in the Native South seeks to complicate and Indigenize existing conversations regarding gender in Native North America based on a better understanding of Native gender history. This anthology focuses on gender in the Native South before 1850 and how Indigenous ideas about gender in the past interacted with other aspects of personhood, such as age, clan membership, and marital status.
By prioritizing how gender manifests in human social relationships as well as in everyday socio-political organization, the essays in this collection illuminate the ways in which gender identity depended on more than economic connections or political influence. This allows the collection to highlight a more nuanced investigation of manhood, womanhood, and other gender expressions and the ways in which gendered concepts of spiritual power and authority changed over time. Essays by Alejandra Dubcovsky, Michelle LeMaster, Greg O'Brien, Keely Smith, and others address change and continuity, exploring how historical dimensions of Indigenous practices have informed adaptation throughout the Native South.
