Epithelial¿mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a pivotal process in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) whereby epithelial cells acquire motile, invasive mesenchymal features, driving local invasion, lymph node metastasis, recurrence, and worse survival. EMT in OSCC is characterized by coordinated loss of epithelial markers-E¿cadherin and membrane ß¿catenin-and a cadherin switch to N¿cadherin, alongside a gain of mesenchymal proteins such as vimentin and ¿¿smooth muscle actin; EMA/MUC1 and EMT transcription factors (Snail, Slug and ZEB1) further link epithelial disruption to transcriptional reprogramming. Immunohistochemistry provides a practical approach to detect these graded phenotypic shifts and to stratify tumors by invasive potential and prognosis. Molecular drivers including EGFR, PI3K/AKT, and TGF¿ß pathways mediate EMT and represent actionable targets to limit metastasis and recurrence. Integrating EMT¿associated IHC panels into OSCC diagnostics may improve prognostication and guide targeted, personalized therapies for aggressive disease.
