A new selection of stories from an under-celebrated modernist, hand-picked by your friends at Smith & Taylor. Unlike larger collections, Dill Pickle and Selected Stories emphasizes Mansfield’s versatility, while offering readers a more accessible entry-point into her oeuvre.
The stories in Katherine Mansfield’s Dill Pickle converge on themes of female agency and the portrayal of women’s subjectivity during times of rapid and intense social change. Her work is reminiscent of other modernists, like Woolf and Joyce, but speaks to readers of more recent contemporary classics such as Jacqueline Harpman’s I Who Have Never Known Men, and the novels of Vigdis Hjorth.
Recent reissues of Katherine Mansfield have focused on capturing the breadth and extent of her work, but our volume takes the opposite tact. A curated volume meant to be a companion to bring the reader into Mansfield’s work through our selection, as well as through our conversation. This is what Smith and Taylor does best, not simply to publish classics, but to provide a space and model for conversations around those books.
