This handbook offers a comprehensive survey of playwrights, works, and cultural practices of the proliferating field of American drama. It provides a historical overview of major developments, delineates social-political contexts for dramatic production and reception, and discusses aesthetic-theoretical approaches and reflections that have shaped the field. A special emphasis is placed on the investigation of the current American stage and the new forms of storytelling it both engages and projects. Part one of this handbook is designed to provide, for researchers and students alike, a compact survey of major trends and preoccupations, genre developments, theoretical concepts, and academic debates. Part two focuses on in-depth textual analysis and cultural interpretation of both representative American plays and lesser-known dramatic works in order to critically investigate and, finally, perhaps to shift processes of canon formation and concomitant cultural representations as well.
