The facebow is a prosthodontic instrument that records the spatial relationship of the maxillary arch to the TMJ and transfers it to an articulator. Since the maxilla is fixed and the mandible is movable, maintaining proper maxillomandibular relation is essential. It works based on orientational jaw relation, allowing the mandible to rotate around a transverse horizontal axis near the condyles.Facebows evolved from early devices, such as Bonwill's triangle theory, to the modern design introduced by Snow. They are classified into arbitrary facebows, which approximate the hinge axis using anatomical landmarks, and kinematic facebows, which locate the true hinge axis and are more accurate but complex. Main components include a U-shaped frame, condylar rods, bite fork, locking device, and a third reference point.Clinically, facebows are used in full mouth rehabilitation, balanced occlusion, and diagnostic mounting. They help record condylar relationships and occlusal plane orientation. Recent advancements include digital facebows and CAD/CAM integration, enhancing precision in modern prosthodontics.
