The complete texts and more than 100 accompanying photographs of Roosevelt's autobiographies, meticulously restored from the first editions
An unrivalled selection of her outspoken and perceptive writings on politics, democracy, citizenship, and patriotism: all essential reading for the current moment. A savvy political advocate and an immensely popular writer, Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the most inspiring, influential, and controversial American public figures of the past hundred years. As the nation's longest-serving First Lady, and the first to byline regular columns in newspapers and magazines, she staked out daringly progressive positions on democracy, civil rights, and the role of government; on war, human rights, and international cooperation; and on labor, feminism, and education, among many other issues. Her books, essays, and articles redefined the possibilities and responsibilities of politics in the twentieth century, and they continue to resonate today. Now Library of America presents a two-volume edition of Roosevelt's writings gathering her classic autobiographies and the best of her political and social activism. Roosevelt's memoirs were instant best sellers, and, together with her prolific political writings, they admitted ordinary Americans into the fascinating life experience and dynamic thinking of a woman who occupied an unprecedented position in our national life. This first volume includes her first two autobiographies in their complete original texts, beginning with This Is My Story (1937). Published at the start of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's second term, it describes her upper-class childhood and the early deaths of her parents, her marriage and motherhood, and her husband's entry into politics, ending in 1924 when FDR returned to public life after his polio diagnosis. Her second autobiography, This I Remember (1949), continues Roosevelt's story through the Depression, her husband's governorship of New York, and the White House and war years, and ends with the President's death in 1945. The volume concludes with a selection of fifteen articles written by Roosevelt from 1923 to 1944, tracing her first forays into Democratic women's politics in the 1920s, her extensive fieldwork as the President's "eyes, ears, and legs" during the Depression, her early engagement with civil rights, and her perilous travels during World War II. As a special feature, it also includes eighty-three meticulously restored photographs from the first editions of Roosevelt's autobiographies.Noch keine Bewertungen vorhanden
