Outraged by the precarious economic situation in which some of the conquistadors had been left, and by the publication of what he--quite rightly--considered to be secondhand accounts of the conquest of Mexico, Bernal Díaz del Castillo undertook, in the mid-16th century--twenty-five years after having laid down his arms--the titanic task of writing his own version--the "true" one--of the conquest of the Mexica Empire by the troops of Hernán Cortés. The result of that settling of scores is this fascinating chronicle, in which Díaz del Castillo describes in extraordinary detail the splendor of the Mexica civilization and the vicissitudes faced by the conquistadors. This edition of *The True History of the Conquest of New Spain*--carefully anthologized and adapted into modern Spanish--places at the disposal of the contemporary reader an exceptional narrative regarding one of the most striking episodes in human history: the encounter between Europe and the Americas. It is a classic of Hispanic literature that we can now read with the fluidity of a gripping novel.
