A principal component of the UNESCO Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site, the Avebury henge is one of the pre-eminent megalithic monuments of Neolithic Europe. It has an important position in narratives of the Neolithic period in the British Isles. Yet despite its international importance, much remains to be understood. Our knowledge of Avebury derives largely from excavation campaigns that took place between 1934 and 1939 that have never been fully analysed and comprehensively published. The key published report on the 1930s' work was published in 1965 and was, by nature of its commission, very synthetic.
The volume emerges from the work of the AHRC-funded The Avebury Papers project, and its focus is upon Avebury's West Kennet Avenue - a 2.5 km long megalithic structure forming a key component of the Avebury complex. The Avebury Papers has completed the work that ended so abruptly in 1939: carrying out unfinished programmes of post-excavation analysis and synthesising the mass of information surviving only in archive form. For the first time the full detail of the archaeology revealed by these excavations is brought to light and the results brought into conversation with current debates regarding the remarkable developments that took place during the 4th and 3rd millennia. The volume offers new interpretations of the Avenue, of prior histories of activity along its excavated length, and of subsequent engagements, including burial against stones, and the Avenue's dilapidation. It also identifies a series of key priorities, flagging outstanding questions, and challenges for future research.
