He’s strikingly handsome, his manners are curious, challenging, and almost playful, but there is something undeniably strange about him. It’s as though the shadows linger around him a little too long, and sometimes his eyes seem to change color. What exactly has Mireille gotten herself into? I’ve had a real love-hate relationship with this story. It’s been a week since I finished it, and I still can’t fully decide how I feel about it. One thing is certain, though: I’m thoroughly intrigued and desperate to find out what happens next. And this story will continue to stay with me for a while. This story is one long tragedy. It follows a young woman whose fate feels worse than death. Mireille is someone who has never truly had anything of her own. She’s never experienced genuine love, and her life has been relentlessly cruel from the very beginning. More than once, I found myself thinking, surely it can’t get any worse than this. I was wrong. It gets worse. This book feels like a slow descent into madness, and ladies, if I’m saying that, you know I mean it - this story is dark. Mireille endures physical and emotional suffering at a level that would break almost anyone. The agony felt palpable, and witnessing the sheer extent of her torment was often difficult to bear and I felt emotionally devastated a lot. The hopelessness of her situation really got under my skin and made me question what I would have done in her place while shedding a few tears. The writing is incredibly polished and mature. At times, the prose is almost lyrical, and I especially loved the mythology woven into the latter part of the story. The lore surrounding the gods was beautifully written and added another layer of depth to an already complex story. I loved the introduction to the characters. They are wonderfully layered, with a lot of depth. My biggest issue was the dynamic between the three main characters. At times, their relationships felt frustratingly vague, almost as if they were all stuck in a state of limbo. There were moments when I genuinely questioned whether any of them knew what they wanted or why they were making certain choices. I loved the atmosphere and overall mood of the story. However, I’m still torn when it comes to the pacing. I can’t decide whether it was simply too slow for my personal taste or whether that slow, deliberate progression was necessary for the story being told. Either way, there were definitely stretches where I found myself craving more momentum. The final 20% had me completely hooked. Suddenly, everything became so much more interesting, and I found myself on the edge of my seat and the ending left staring into space thinking, What the hell just happened? If you enjoy character-driven fantasy without extensive world-building, you’ll probably like this book. Much of the story reads almost like a chamber piece, with the entire story taking place on the castle grounds and the majority of the plot unfolding within the castle walls and one room in particular. Finally, the audiobook cast was phenomenal. Meg Sylvan, E.M. Wylde, and Corvin King all delivered outstanding performances and brought these characters vividly to life. Highly recommended!
