The three works translated here (The Trojan Women, Hecuba, Helen) revolve around captive female figures, with Hecuba and Helen at their center. In the first two tragedies, all the Trojan women stand together as a collective body, with Hecuba as their foremost figure; by contrast, Helen stands utterly alone-present or absent, captive of the Achaeans or of the Egyptians. The choice of Euripides' Helen, with its subversive reworking of the myth, was favored as a stage act that delicately balances between comic and dramatic elements, inevitably leading to a release from the somber atmosphere of Trojan devastation that permeates the other two tragedies.
Ultimately, in this particular play the fair-haired heroine acquires autonomy with restraint within her own myth and bears no relation to the provocative Spartan woman of The Trojan Women; nor, of course, does the optimistic ending of Helen foreshadow that somewhere in Argos the wheel-driven avenger, Orestes, lies in wait. The Asia Minor catastrophe of Troy, over the centuries, changes names along the length of the coast, culminating in our own time in the massacre of Gaza.
Following the trilogies The Theban Cycle (Sophocles: Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone) and Three Versions of Electra (Aeschylus: The Libation Bearers, Sophocles: Electra, Euripides: Electra), the poet Dimitris Kalokyris continues his triadic approaches to ancient poetic discourse, this time linking three Euripidean tragedies that originate in the Trojan War.
