Jorge Macías is a government hitman, nicknamed the European for the fastidiousness he employs in his mission: eliminating enemies of the system. As the end of the administration approaches, however, he finds himself out of a job, with the outgoing president dedicating the time he has left in office to inaugurating new works and reveling in public adulation. Expelled from the inner circle of power, Macías feels lost. When he’s called back for a special mission, he eagerly accepts, despite the enormity of the task: assassinating the ruling party’s presidential candidate. As he ventures into territory disputed by drug cartels and the federal police, Macías discovers that all the conspiracies he is following lead back to a single man.
First published in 1999, A Lone Assassin marked Élmer Mendoza’s first foray into fiction, elevating him to the ranks of Mexico’s leading authors and earning him the title of, in the words of Arturo Pérez-Reverte, “the father of Norteño literature.”
