There is a special kind of delight in rediscovering the mundane through the rarified language of poetry. As if naming the commonplace with extraordinary precision resulted not only in new poems, but also new worlds, in a kind of verbal magic with the power to transform the very workings of reality.
The title of this book plays with the idea of byobu, the Japanese screens used as decorations or room dividers. In Japanese, the term derives from the words for “wall” and “wind.” Vitale invokes it here in reflections on the trivial and habitual, stemming from the premise that words open a world of possibilities.
