The Wolf and His King is a retelling of Bisclavret, the 12th century French werewolf tale, and it completely drew me in. It’s written in second-person POV, which usually takes me a little while to get used to since it’s not a style I read often. But here it worked really well and fit the story perfectly. The story follows Bisclavret, who lives with a curse that turns him into a wolf. It doesn’t happen constantly, but often enough that it shapes his entire life. The only thing that keeps him grounded is the scent of his former clothes — something that helps him hold onto his humanity. Because of the curse, he spends years in exile before eventually becoming a knight at the king’s court. Living with the constant fear of losing control and becoming dangerous to others gives Bisclavret this quiet tension and distance. It’s exactly that difference that draws the king’s attention, and from there the story slowly unfolds. And when I say slow burn — I really mean it. If you love romances built on patience and longing, this delivers. The tension, the restraint, the yearning between Bisclavret and the king was so well done. Every glance, every small moment, every bit of held-back emotion matters. This is very much a character driven story. It focuses more on emotions and inner conflict than on worldbuilding. The setting feels historical, but the fantasy element stays closely tied to the curse rather than expanding into a larger magical world. What made this work so well for me was Bisclavret himself. You feel for him so easily- his fear, his isolation, and especially the way he longs for something he believes he can never have. I also grew really fond of the king, which made their dynamic even stronger. I did start to guess where things were heading at some point, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment at all because I was so invested in Bisclavret as a character. My only small criticism is that the ending felt a bit short. Still, I really liked how it concluded. I loved this book and flew through it in less than 24 hours. If you enjoy character-driven fantasy, emotional longing, and slow-burn romance built on tension rather than instant payoff, I’d definitely recommend it. ✨
