The Compound

I was really looking forward to reading The Compound by Jacqueline Harpman, and at first it delivered exactly what I hoped for. The opening, with its reality-show-like setup, immediately pulled me in and made me curious about the direction the story would take. For a while, I was genuinely excited to see how Harpman would develop the plot and explore her sharp critique of consumerism. Unfortunately, around the halfway mark, the momentum started to fade. Many of the narratives began to feel repetitive, and some characters who could have added real depth to the story were left underdeveloped. The second half dragged on compared to the strong start. That being said, Harpman’s witty writing style and the originality of the concept still made it an entertaining read. It wasn’t quite what I had hoped for, but I can appreciate the ambition behind it, even if I ultimately only rate it ★★☆☆☆.
