To Bleed a Crystal Bloom - 4.5-Star Dark Romantasy

Whispers & Pages am 19.03.2026

Bewertungsnummer: 3082696

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Rhordyn sets out to check on a friend at one of his safe houses. But he’s too late. The place has been ravaged by Vruks, dark, brutal, creatures that leave nothing but death in their wake. He finds his friend barely clinging to life, and with her final breaths, she makes him promise to protect her daughter at all costs. A daughter she’s kept hidden from everyone for two years. Rhordyn finds the little girl in the ruins. Alive. Protected by powerful magic. He rescues her only to find out why she was kept secret. She’s been marked by death and is tied to a prophecy. One that might require Rhordyn to kill her. Unable to bear the thought, he chooses to hide her away from the world instead. Nineteen years later, Orlaith has grown into a young woman, living as Rhordyn’s ward in one of his towers. She’s sheltered not only by him, but by the walls she’s built around herself. She knows there’s something wrong with her. There’s darkness inside her that she fights every day. She fears herself, the world, and the past she can’t remember. All she knows is that Rhordyn is her savior, her anchor, the center of her small, controlled, and sheltered life. This book felt like a fever dream. For the first 40% you have no idea what’s going on, but the poetic prose and raw emotion pull you in anyway. Then you pass the delirious state, and a few pieces start clicking into place, and you find yourself intrigued and invested. After the heat waves finally subside, things still remain blurry and fuzzy in your head and a lot of time has passed that you can’t account for. But it was a great and vivid dream, and you can’t let go just yet. The story is the definition of a slow burn. So very painfully slow at times. It’s mysterious, dark, and deeply atmospheric, with beautiful prose and a rich, unique lore full of myths and monsters. Information is drip-fed and this extraordinary dark Rapunzel retelling is loaded with tension and angst. At times, I felt it reminiscent of Tamlin and Feyre’s dynamic in the first ACOTAR book. Orlaith is a very naïve and sheltered FMC. I went back and forth between wanting to shake her and yell at her to stop being childish and afraid and wanting to wrap her in a hug, telling her everything was going to be ok. Her potential for growth is undeniable, and I’m excited to see where her journey leads. This isn’t a book you can just breeze through. It demands patience and a willingness to embrace an unconventional storytelling style. It won’t be for everyone, and I can easily see why it may polarize. So, if you decide to go in, do so with an open mind and no expectations, because it might just pull you in, like it did with me. Story: 4.5 ⭐️ Spice: 0.5
