The Lady of the Lake

Dr Jean Menzies delivers a new and exciting twist on the old arthurian legends! Told entirely from the perspective of Viviane (also known as Nimue or The Lady Of The Lake), we get to follow her character from youth to adulthood and watch her slowly discover her magic and forge relationships to the other inhabitants of Camelot (especially Morgan). I found the book incredibly well researched, with small references to stories and characters from the original arthurian legends, but also new and refreshing with the focus on it's fierce female characters. The writing flowed very nicely but some sentences felt oddly modern at times, although it didn't bother me too much. I felt deeply immersed in the fantastical world of Camelot and found myself sharing both sorrow and joy with Viviane throughout her story. The sweet slow burn romance with Morgan was an added bonus, that was also done beautifully. All in all the story was truly enchanting and I enjoyed it greatly.
