Quitely Powerful
If I had to describe this book in two words it would be 'quitely powerful'. Despite its barely 300 pages Aw manages to give the reader the full scope of a family dynamic and its interaction to the wider political climate of the setting. My main critique is that I had a somewhat hard time finding my footing in the setting. Neither from the blurb nor from the first couple of chapters could I have known that this story is set in Malaysia. I had also assumed that the lack of specific time given was a choice made by the author, yet other online reviews give it as 1997, a year marked by the Asian financial crisis. The prose is definitely more on the slow and melancholic side, so be warned, it isn't everyone's cup of tea. Overall, I enjoyed reading The South and its themes invite readers to ruminate even after finishing the book.
