Chasing the Wild

Let me start this off by saying: WOW! I couldn't stop reading this book, it scratched just the right spot. From the start where tension had sparked heavy at first Flirt in a Gas Station, up to when snow fell and there was no escape from Devil's Peak. WOW WOW WOW! It's hot, it's heavy, it's Colton Wilder with his Cap on backwards. AGE GAP, Ex boyfriends Dad, kind of a workplace romance.

This is the story of Layla and Colton. Layla is 25, a trainee vet who had a tough life and is used to dealing with everything on her own. She’s always struggled financially, and her ex-boyfriend only makes things worse. He asks her to drop off a few of his things on her way to her next trainee position, only for Layla to discover that he has taken out another loan in her name—one she has only a few days to pay back. Already on her way to his house, Layla decides she has no choice but to confront him and figure out how to keep her future from being completely ruined. That’s when she meets Colton, a 42-year-old cowboy who owns a large ranch—and who also happens to be her ex-boyfriend’s father. When Layla’s car breaks down, leaving her stranded and unable to reach her next placement, Colton offers her a job on the ranch to make amends for his son’s actions. Soon, they find themselves snowed in together … and things start to change. If Credence and Birthday Girl had a cowboy baby, it would be this book. Is it great literature? No. Is it great cliterature? Hell yes. This book is definitely more spice than plot, and I was squealing internally the whole time – though the middle dragged a little more than I would’ve liked. That said, the yearning and tension were chef’s kiss, and I had a blast reading this. There’s lots of chemistry, longing, and a slow-burn romance with a really nice balance between heat and emotional depth. Colton’s mouth? Gasps. The way Layla responds to him? Perfection. Despite the large age gap, they fit surprisingly well together. I loved both main characters – which is rare for me – and there was something very addictive about the writing. I also really enjoyed the audiobook; Gabriel Sparks and Amy Hall did a fantastic job bringing the story to life. If you enjoy cowboy and forbidden romance, age gaps, forced proximity, the snowed-in trope, and a possessive man with a very filthy mouth, then this book is definitely for you.
