cute but nothing special

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

The book Cheer for Love immediately appealed to me because the cover with Ella and Hudson looks super cute and immediately shows that it's a sports romance. The main character, Ella, moves to the USA for a semester abroad to join the cheerleading squad. The whole trip was planned with her long-time boyfriend Jamie, but he leaves her shortly before departure. When she meets Hudson in a bar on her first night, they both feel an instant attraction. But when they find out that Hudson is the quarterback and Ella is one of the cheerleaders, they can no longer see each other because there is a rule against dating. The two characters are described in detail at the beginning, so you get to know them quickly. As the story progresses, however, there are hardly any descriptions, so the two seem rather bland. Even the supporting characters are sometimes characterized with just one word, which I found very unfortunate. The relationship between the two is very volatile, as they are not actually allowed to date due to the rule, but still try to get closer (physically) again and again. Towards the end, it was a constant back and forth, which became a bit tedious. One really important aspect of the story was Ella and Hudson's sporting activities. On the one hand, the author described exactly how the two of them felt, and the descriptions of cheerleading made it feel as if you were flying through the air yourself. I really liked the fact that the sporting aspect was addressed so precisely and so often, as it suited both characters well. One thing that bothered me throughout, however, was the writing style, which was very analytical and didn't really follow the "show don't tell" concept. The characters always clearly stated their feelings and explained in detail why they behaved the way they did... This disrupted my reading flow. All in all, the story is nice for in between, but in my opinion, it's nothing outstanding.
