Angel Down (Pulitzer Prize Winner)

The Great War - four years of endless grenades, mustard gas and shrapnell tore lush pastures apart and turned France into hostil a wasteland - and when Cyril Bagger, a conman as well as the son of a preacher, was finally drafted as canon fodder for the American army, it was him, the batallion's gravedigger with all his wits and schemes, who was chosen for a special mission - and it was a mission that could tip the scales, turn the "War To End All Wars" into a victorious one for the American history classes to come, cementing his name as well as those of his companions as the heroic figures that they attempted to be - and what better way to reach icon status, a warhero title, than to deliver the ultimate weapon of mass-destruction, mass-redemption, mass-salvation, an angel straight from the heavens sent upon earth to help Cyril Bagger and his troops to get what he always wanted. Daniel Kraus is the latest Pulitzer-Prize recipient for this very novel, an anti-war epic that keeps on going like the gunfire of a semi-automatic, the entire book a single sentence that captivates and holds its grip tight around the reader's attention. Unapologetic and raw language paired with the horrors of the Great War makes for a read that might haunt me in my dreams - but I shall revel in this reading experience for a long long time nonetheless. One of the greatest books I've read - ever.
