The Fox and the Devil

aaahh I do love me some lesbian vampires I really enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. I went in with basically no expectations except lesbian vampires, so that probably helped. But it was genuinely a very enjoyable read, despite detective fiction (even with a paranormal element) not really being my favourite genre. The plot is obviously driven by the main character Anneke Van Helsing’s hunt for her father’s killer; an entrancing, monstrous woman, a serial killer with a very strange MO, leaving mutilated corpses all across Europe. If that had been all, I probably wouldn’t have liked this book very much, but fortunately there’s a lovable cast of characters accompanying Anneke on her mad dash across the continent. And that found family of her’s was one of the highlights of the book for me. I absolutely loved their dynamics and I’m always a sucker for a found family. The other major highlight is the yearning. Because goddamn there’s some intense yearning going on in there and it is done so deliciously. I didn’t think I could feel chemistry between a vampire serial killer and the freelance investigator chasing her, but I’m happy to have been proven wrong. ---- Thank you to Del Rey for the ARC
