Okay but not captivating

Bewertung am 01.01.2026

Bewertungsnummer: 2689263

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

Too easy to put aside. A hint of insight into stories from another part of the world. No suspense, no compassion. Too superficial, does not elicit empathy for the characters. No setbacks, negative events that make you question the story and hope for a happy ending.

If you like Ghibli movies, especially Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle, this is the book for you. The world felt really magical and whimsical and I loved all the characters and the creatures from korean mythology. Definitely a good book if you are looking for these kinds of Vibes. The writing style was also very nice which made it a very easy and quick read.

A Lyrical Journey Through Korean Mythology

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

"The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea" is a breathtaking, modern fairy tale that swept me away from the very first page. As someone who deeply loves Asian mythology, this story felt like a gift: rich in atmosphere, folklore, and quiet emotional power. Axie Oh tells Mina’s story with a gentle, almost dreamlike voice, weaving sacrifice, destiny, and hope into a world filled with gods, spirits, and ancient magic. The novel doesn’t rely on constant action or spectacle; instead, it unfolds through mood, imagery, and heartfelt moments that linger long after reading. Mina is a beautifully written protagonist—compassionate, courageous, and thoughtful—whose strength lies not in force, but in empathy and resolve. The spirit world is vivid and enchanting, and the mythological elements feel both timeless and fresh. This is a story that feels like standing at the shore between myth and reality: quiet, emotional, and deeply moving. A must-read for fans of lyrical fantasy, folklore retellings, and especially for anyone who cherishes Asian mythology.

Whimsical and lovely!

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

This book has a beautiful storyline, and the writing is captivating. Reading this story feels like watching a Ghibli movie. A big part of this book is the aspects of Korean mythology that the author involves in the story. I especially liked the relationship between the two main characters and how the red string of fate always brings them back together. I’d definitely recommend this book to everyone who likes fantasy with mythology aspects and/or fans of the Studio Ghibli movies.
