The Hedgehog’s Dilemma is a gentle and thoughtful story that conveys more emotion and depth in just 176 pages than many much longer books. The little hedgehog wants to invite other animals over – but he can’t bring himself to send the invitation, because he’s trapped in a spiral of overthinking. Toon Tellegen captures with great sensitivity how fears, doubts, and endless what ifs can paralyze us. It’s a story about social anxiety, the longing for connection, and the fear of rejection. I saw myself in so many of the hedgehog’s thoughts. How we imagine every possible scenario, how our mind constantly finds new reasons not to act – and how hard it can be to break out of that cycle. This story is quiet, tender, and honest. It shows how self-destructive our own thoughts can become – but also that we’re not alone in feeling this way. A book for young and old alike. For anyone who sometimes feels overwhelmed by the idea of simply reaching out. And one you can surely return to again and again.
