Hungerstone A Novel

It's more of a 4,5/5 stars; I absolutely loved the writing and the story. Dunn described realictically how the world worked for women in the 19th century, even if they're part of the High Society. I liked that she included the Industrial Revolution as part of the hunger metaphor. Lenore is a great characer, full of loneliness and expectations to fulfill. Her interactions with Carmilla are either extremely funny or full of tension. I don't want to spoil anything more, but if you generally like vampire stories, some historical fiction and a Sapphic retelling of the classic "Carmilla", this book is for you :)

Imagine the classic 'Carmilla' but from Lauras perspective. A suspenseful mixture of gothic horror, medieval fiction and female rage underlinded with a fitting and atmospheric prose.

Hungerstone von Kate Dunn ist eine moderne, feministische Version von Carmilla – mit viel Gefühl, queerer Spannung und dem starken Thema: Hunger nach Freiheit und Selbstbestimmung. Die Story ist packend und atmosphärisch, die Figuren haben Tiefe, und das Ganze fühlt sich angenehm zeitgemäß an. Was mir ein bisschen gefehlt hat: mehr Nähe zum Original und dieser richtig dichte Gothic-Vibe. Ein bisschen mehr düstere Stimmung hätte der Geschichte gutgetan. Trotzdem definitiv lesenswert!
