I watched Apple TV's version first, which heavily influences my view on the book. For all of Apple's problems (or perhaps because of them), they understand a surveillance state far better than Howey does. Characters in the show are also fleshed out a lot more, including Juliette, Jahns, Lukas and Solo. A lot of times characters act because the plot needs to happen but the motivations are lacking. The prose is great during technical details and abysmal when Lukas and Juliette talk. Every romantic relationship except for Jahns and Marnes could have been ommitted. Three stars for the ideas. Two off for any worldbuilding having to do with people and sociology.
