Die Hauptcharaktere, Xiao Chiye und Shen Zechuan, sind einfach zum verlieben. Im Hintergrund der Hofpolitik entwickelt sich ihre Beziehung buchstäblich von Feinden zu Liebhabern, begleitet durch charmante, provokative Gespräche, unerwartete Wendungen im Hinblick wer von den beiden tatsächlich einen Schritt voraus ist, sowie interessante Einblicke in Schuld vs. Unschuld, wie diese aus Sicht von sowohl Haupt- als auch Nebencharakteren dargelegt werden. Die persönliche Entwicklung der zwei Männer ist sehr gefühlsam beschrieben: die Sehnsucht von Xiao Chiye nach der Freiheit, die er nur in seiner Heimat haben kann; das Trauma des Überlebens in der blutigen Schlacht von Shen Zechuan, der für das Verrat seines Vaters sowie den Tod von mehrerer Tausend Menschen verantwortlich gehalten wird. Und trotzdem kommt für keinen in Frage einfach zu stoppen und sich mit dem Schicksal abzufinden - beide kämpfen sich durch und finden in ein ander verwandte Seelen.
