The narrative of "For the School Colours" by Angela Brazil unfolds in the context of Silverside School, which is undergoing significant changes. The story begins with the introduction of Avelyn Watson, a new weekly boarder at Silverside, who previously attended The Hawthorns, a day school that has now merged with Silverside. This merger brings about a cultural clash between the boarders and the new influx of day students, leading to tensions and divisions within the school. The boarders, led by Adah Gartley, feel their traditions and privileges are threatened by the newcomers. They form a Boarders' League to preserve the school's ideals and propose the establishment of prefects to maintain order and uphold the school's standards. Meanwhile, Avelyn finds herself caught between her past at The Hawthorns and her new life at Silverside. The story explores themes of loyalty, adaptation, and the challenges of integrating different school cultures. As the students navigate these changes, they learn valuable lessons about unity and the importance of embracing new perspectives while maintaining their core values.
