Beautiful, biting and brimming with longing

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

I LOVED this book. Allison Saft definitely knows how to immerse the reader into the dark atmosphere. The way she writes, you can literally feel the biting cold of the wind, see the colours of the sunset bleed into the night, hear the rustling of decaying fallen autumn leaves. It is pure magic. I admit, this book is not too heavy when it comes to the plot, it is quite straightforward. But the real gem here is character development and their feelings. The book is very introspective. We have perspectives of Wes and Margaret, both have their own complexities and traumas, jagged edges that clash and collide when coming in contact with one another. The book is brimming with yearning and passion, Allison Saft definitely knows how to play on your heartstrings! The only thing that I found a bit disappointing is that the book finale, the hunt, was too rushed and fumbled. But all in all the book was well paced so the finale did not spoil my overall impression of the book too much. I would say this book has more vibes than the plot; I personally don't mind that... The cover of the book deserves a shout-out of its own, it is absolutely gorgeous and matches the book perfectly, the artist did an awesome job! Perfect read for late autumn or winter!

A cute dark acadamia - esque Book

This book is such a nice and cozy read! The thing I loved most about this book was the rather simple act of having both the perspective of Margaret as well as Wes's. As this gives their forming relationship so much more dimension. It's not just the typical point of view from the girl falling hopelessly in love with the charming guy, but rather let's the romance breathe and bounce a little between them. Their love story unfolds in a beautiful atmosphere with the main scene of action being a lonely, overgrown house in the middle of the woods. Nonetheless this book manages to give a warm, homely feeling, splintered by looming and ominous Fragments. The only shortcomings for me werer the absence of darkness in this Book. For example the revelation of Margarets traumatic event with her mother, seemed too mild and not really horribly enough? I know it is a YA book, but I really wished it had more darker elements, it feels like the whole setting of the book yearns for more of it. The other thing was the lack of unfurling the world and events further at the end. We get all these hints and explanations of alchemy and this ancient fox, but the ending didn't satisfy the longing for answers and more knowledge of this system. I really wish the author would explore this world more in another book! :)
