Visuelle Medien - Bildillustrierte, Fotografien, Plakate oder Filme - waren nicht nur Ausdruck der tiefgreifenden gesellschaftlichen, politischen und kulturellen Umbrüche und Konflikte nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg, sondern agierten auch als deren Multiplikatorinnen. Als Räume für die Aushandlung aktueller Debatten und Indiz neuer gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen - insbesondere in Bezug auf zeitgenössische Geschlechterentwürfe und/oder die Thematisierung sexuellen Begehrens - schufen sie zugleich ein Experimentierfeld für soziale, kulturelle und politische Bewegungen sowie Begegnungen. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Themenhefts befassen sich mit unterschiedlichen visuellen Medien der 1920er- und 1930er-Jahre und rücken dabei kommerzielle und künstlerische Praktiken ebenso in den Blick wie die Produzent*innen und Konsument*innen visueller Kultur. Sie fragen nach Formen, Darstellungsweisen, Motiven und Figuren, die in diesem Kontext zirkulierten, sowie nach Produktions- und Rezeptionsräumen und deren emanzipativem Potenzial.
Visual media such as magazines, photographs, posters or films - were not only an expression of profound social, political and cultural upheavals and conflicts after World War I, but also acted as multipliers. As spaces for negotiating current debates and indications of new social developments - especially with regard to contemporary gender concepts and/or the thematization of sexual desire - they also created an experimental field for social, cultural and political movements and encounters. The contributions in this present issue deal with various visual media of the 1920s and 1930s, focusing on commercial and artistic practices as well as the producers and consumers of visual culture. They examine forms, types of manifestations, motives and figures that circulated in this context, as well as production and reception spaces and their emancipatory potential.
