Based on the real life Mary Lumpkin

Bewertung am 18.03.2025

Bewertungsnummer: 2442092

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

A heart-rending story that’s about a young enslaved woman living in one of the most known slave jails in Virginia. We follow Pheby Delores Brown in her life as she starts out as a slave on a plantation where she is promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday. But instead of freedom she finds herself being sold off to a jailer who owns the Devils Half Acre, a prison where slaves are tortured and sold every day. The book features a lot of graphic depictions of slavery as well as violence, rape, abuse and torture. It is not a lighthearted story but a very eye-opening one and the author will have you glued to the pages with her fast paced and striking writing style. Sadeqa Johnson based it on the real life Mary Lumpkin and she did a phenomenal job of capturing this very real and touching story. I highly recommend this book.
