In Pottstown, Pennsylvania, soll ein neues Baugebiet erschlossen werden. Bei den ersten Arbeiten wird in einem alten Brunnen ein Skelett gefunden. Vor mehr als dreißig Jahren ist es dort gelangt. In den 1930er Jahren lebten in dem einfachen Viertel leben jüdische Einwanderer und schwarze Amerikaner. Moshe Ludlow und seine Frau Chona, die mit einigen Theatern angefangen haben, führen einen Lebensmittelladen. Ihre Geschäfte haben sie immer auch für ihre afroamerikanischen Nachbarn geöffnet. Obwohl das nicht jedem im Ort gefallen hat, stehen sie dazu. Doch mit Chonas Gesundheit steht es nicht zum Besten und Moshe macht sich große Sorgen um seine Frau.
Chona Ludlow ist gewissermaßen der Mittelpunkt der Gemeinde. Sie wird von den meisten Anwohnern gemocht. Bei manchen ist sie allerdings auch angeeckt. Mit einer guten Freundin ist der Kontakt beinahe abgerissen. Chona ist es versagt geblieben, eigene Kinder zu bekommen. Während Berenice mit Kindern gesegnet ist. Und nicht alle in Pottstown sind begeistert, dass Chona und Moshe immer auch Kontakt zu den afroamerikanischen Nachbarn hatten und ihre Unternehmen für sie geöffnet haben. Zu dem macht sich Moshe große Sorgen um Chonas Gesundheit. Zeitweise befürchtet er, sie könne ihm viel zu früh genommen werden.
Die Handlung des Romans verläuft etwas anders als gedacht. Zwar wird auf einer Baustelle ein Skelett gefunden, jedoch entwickelt sich kein Krimi, sondern eher ein historischer Roman. Aus dem Zusammenleben der jüdischen Einwanderer und der einheimischen Afroamerikaner, die im selben Viertel leben, entspinnt sich eine interessante Geschichte. Dabei ist der Roman in mehrere Handlungsstränge gegliedert, die fließend ineinander übergehen. Manche Beschreibungen berühren sehr und lesen sich sehr fesselnd. Man erfährt etwas über eine ungewöhnliche Gemeinschaft, die von denen, die sich als Stadtobere verstanden, nicht uneingeschränkt gut geheißen wurde. Zum Glück verstehen die handelnden Personen es, zu ihren Wünschen und Zielen zu stehen. Insgesamt ist der Roman zwar nicht wie erwartet, aber doch ein lehrreicher Beitrag über einen Teil der amerikanischen Geschichte.
