City of Nightmares

this book gave me Spirited Away and Tokyo Ghoul vibes - and i need an anime adaption of this book (serie) with the same art style as Cyberpunk (anime)! it reminded me of the book "Six Crimson Cranes" even tho there is NOTHING similar. while "Six Crimson Cranes" is the pastel-princess-fantasy, "City of Nightmares" is the gothic-creepy-fantasy sister.

„Face your fear or become your nightmare.“ Schlaf ist zu einer nicht zu unterschätzenden Bedrohung geworden, denn wer träumt, wacht als sein eigener Albtraum wieder auf. So wurde aus Ness' Schwester eine riesige Spinne, der erst ihr Vater und dann weitere Menschen zum Opfer fielen. Traumatisiert schließt sich Ness den Friends of the Restful Soul an – eine Organisation, die vielleicht eine Sekte ist und Unterstützung für Hinterbliebene anbietet – und lebt in ständiger Angst. Doch nach einem Anschlag wird das Verstecken unmöglich und Ness versucht nicht nur die Wahrheit, sondern auch ihre Vergangenheit zu ergründen. Ness ist ein eher ungewöhnlicher Charakter und voller Ängste und Sorgen, die einen großen Teil ihrer Gedanken einnehmen. Wenn ihr einen Badass MC erwartet und nicht zum Team „Zerdenken“ gehört, solltet ihr das Buch vlt. lieber überspringen. Ich für meinen Teil wollte unbedingt wissen, ob ihr der Schritt aus ihrer Ohnmacht gelingt. Die allgemeine Idee, dass wir durch Träume unser eigener schlimmster Albtraum werden, war in meinen Augen grandios. Vor allem die Erklärung einer Figur hierzu hat mir richtig gut gefallen und einen netten Twist in die Geschehnisse gegeben – aber das wäre ein massiver Spoiler & ich will keine Mistgabeln sehen. Einige allgemeine kritische Themen, die Platz in der Geschichte gefunden haben, habe ich als sehr nachvollziehbar erlebt, während ich andere doch etwas überspitzt fand. Dafür war die Sprache eher einfach – für Zwischendurch und wenn man, wie ich, überwiegend auf Deutsch liest und einen Startschuss im Sinne von „Ha, doch gar nicht so schwierig!“ braucht, genau richtig. Für mich war's ein Highlight! Nicht, weil es gar keine Kritikpunkte geben würde, sondern weil ich extrem viel Spaß beim Lesen hatte und mich die Idee begeistert hat. Auf die Fortsetzung bin ich auch schon sehr gespannt: „If she wants to survive, she’s going to have to conquer the most difficult enemy of all: herself“.

Ich habe mir vorgenommen dieses Jahr mehr auf Englisch zu lesen und da tatsächlich fast direkt (ist das zweite Buch) so ein persönliches Highlight erwischt. :D Ein erfrischend anderes Buch. Sehr schräg, spannend und unterhaltsam bis zum Ende. Ich hoffe sehr auf einen zweiten Band!

Ich muss zugeben, der Klappentext allein hätte mich nicht vom Buch überzeugt. Für mich klingt er nicht nach etwas, was mir gefallen könnte. Aber ich wurde positiv überrascht. Die Autorin hatte mit der Stadt Newham die Intention, etwas zu schaffen, was an Gotham City erinnert. Und das ist ihr perfekt gelungen. Die ganze düstere Stimmung, die Korruptionen, die Verbrechen - hello Gotham City. Ich fand’s wirklich cool. Und die Idee, Menschen zu ihren schlimmsten Albträumen werden zu lassen? Genial! Es war wirklich originell und an keiner Stelle langweilig. Nur manchmal vielleicht etwas flach gehalten. Ness fand ich als Protagonistin zwar manchmal seltsam, aber insgesamt hat sie das alles super gemeistert und eine tolle Entwicklung hingelegt. Ihr Zusammenspiel mit dem Vampir Cy (Hiiii Stefan aus Vampire Diaries) fand ich auch gelungen, allerdings hätte ich mir hier noch etwas mehr Emotionalität gewünscht. Sie blieben sehr distanziert. Aber ich denke, wenn es einen 2. Band geben sollte, wird dazu noch einiges kommen. Insgesamt eine spannende und coole Geschichte, die ich wirklich weiterempfehlen kann.

When I first heard about „City of Nightmares“, I was instantly hooked. The main idea sounded interesting and gave me „Monsters of Verity“ Vibes, and I loved that duology, so I made sure that I picked it up. My vibe prediction was, in fact, correct, and I enjoyed my reading time. The book had way more horror and brutal elements than I expected for a YA fantasy book. I don’t read horror or thriller novels, so maybe I’m just not used to it. The world-building was solid for a first book, so I had a good grasp of the system. The main character was also interesting and different from the average fantasy MCs. I liked how she handled her fears and how much progress she had throughout the book. The main problem I had with the book was the suspense pacing. There wasn’t a climax at the end, but rather more different little ones during the book, so the big plot twist at the end felt a bit flat for me. I will read the second book in the duology, but I can safely say, that there is no cliffhanger for you to worry about, and you can think of it as a standalone with a bit of an open ending. Rebecca Schaeffer was a new author for me, and I will look into their other books for sure. I like the darker vibe that I experienced in City of Nightmares. Overall this was a solid read for me. I enjoyed reading it, but it was still lacking a bit. Conclusion A nice fantasy book for a good reading time! My rating: 3,5 Stars
